MAG-16 South Vietnam during Tet Offensive 1968...I picked up this Chicom AK-47 (on my left hand)off a deceased enemy Viet Cong gorilla fighter.(M-16 on my right hand). I was on a clean up patrol with Zulu Company next to a village called Dogpatch..I did duty as perimeter guard and patrols with Zulu Company. I also did duty as non crew, (HMM 361 and H&MS16) door gunner sorties on resupplies, extractions and ground support flying on Huey's, the old 34's and 46's helicopters. After a couple of dozen of these sorties, I went back to perimeter guard and patrols. I lost a lot of very close bros at Marble Mt....Villalobos, Bustos and others....they will always be my heros'...Semper Fi... Prior to deploying to Nam in 1968 I was a military policeman stateside..at Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Base, Calif (top photo) and then at Marine Barracks Naval Weapons Station, Seal Beach, Calif. (Photo on rightside) While at Seal Beach, 1967, we were issued the old WW-II M1-Garand as our standard rifle. We preformed 21 gun salute burial details, ship ramp details etc among our other duties as MP's. When I was ordered to requilify with my rifle that year, I was sent to El Toro, Marine Corps Base, Calif. At the rifle range I fired a 231 out of a possible 250 points with this tremendously accurate weapon..I really liked it. It had more places to adjust for errors .adjustable sights etc. The instructor at the range was an ole salt, Korean War vet and he gave me good instructions on how to set the sites..everyone else was using the M-14 or M-16 rifle. In boot camp and Vietnam I was issued the M-14 rifle ..my M-14 was later replaced by the M-16 mid summer 1968 in Vietnam.
Before my discharge from the Marine Corps at El Toro, MCB 1969, I was offered by a Marine recruitor, in writing, a few thousand dollars in bonus, an immidiate promotion, with another promotion to follow in six months, the job was embassy duty assignment for six years in the U.S., South America, Mexico and Europe. All I had to do was to re-enlist for six more years. The choice was mine. The offer was good for 30 days after my discharge. But, I declined the offer. Sometimes I wonder, where my fate would have taken me if I had made the Marine Corps my career.

Recently, with help from some Vietnam Vet friends, I applied for healthcare and disability assist from the VA, plus medals and awards I didn't know I had earned. Without their help I would have never known I had so many benefits with my service in the military and in Vietnam. So far the Veterans health care has been great and I can't complain.

</marquee>----------------- A-911 Class Status -------------------
Our A-911 class training is almost complete...our class can't wait for the job fair.
